Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the primary greenhouse gas emitted through human activities and the largest contributor to global warming. Although CO2 is naturally present in the atmosphere and part of the Earth's carbon cycle, the carbon cycle is being altered through human existence. It is estimated that over 36 billion tonnes of CO, was released into the atmosphere in 2022, primarily as a result of coal, oil, and gas production. Greenhouse gas emissions have reached record levels in recent years, and this trend is set to continue. It is expected that the world's carbon emissions will now force average global temperatures to increase by more than 1.5 degrees C.
The volume of waste produced globally is expanding with the world’s population and the rate of economic growth in developing countries. Applying technology to develop circular economy solutions transforms mounting waste into value and drives decarbonization.
